Outside Magazine has named the top ten outdoor towns in the USA. Duluth, MN is the only Midwestern community listed next to Santa Fe, NM; Bellingham WA; and Santa Barbara, CA. Communities were selected based on close access to multiple outdoor activities, employment levels, housing marketing, and intact cultural identity. Features including natural food stores, climbing gyms, outdoor music venues, minor league baseball, and an active arts community were considered in addition to natural attractions. Most known for its rocky shoreline and steep inclines on Lake Superior, Duluth also boasts over 105,000 acres of green space within city limits, 23 streams, over 20 miles of cross country ski trails, 900+ feet of vertical downhill skiing and the gateway to Lake Superior's north shore.
